Installing your new kitchen

To many people, the kitchen truly is the heart of the home. A new fitted kitchen can enhance your home, adding to its value but most importantly your enjoyment of it.

Before setting out on a kitchen remodelling project, you need to be clear about what you want to achieve and what your budget is.

Style

What is your personal style? Do you favour traditional, shaker style units or yearn for a sleek, contemporary feel. Do you want a vintage kitchen to complement your collection of chintz plates and tableware?

Size and Functionality

Do you want an open plan living / dining area? Are you trying to maximise a tiny kitchen area? Do you cook gourmet meals from scratch every night, or do you ferry ready meals between the freezer and microwave every night?

Space Planning

Think carefully about how you want the space to work. Kitchen designers usually start with the triangle of space formed between the sink, cooker and fridge - after all, these areas are the three areas you will be using most when preparing and serving food. Make sure that you allow for sufficient `setting down` space beside each area. If you are planning units back to back in a U shaped kitchen, make sure that you allow enough room for two people to pass comfortably between them - at least 1.2m clear.

Materials

If you can afford a granite or stone worktop, it will probably outlast your house. Virtually maintenance free, it will not score or stain but is cold to the touch. Solid wood worktops give a warm, vibrant, homely feel but can be hard work to maintain, needing regular sanding and staining. Cupboard doors come in a huge variety of wood finishes and solid colours with a high gloss finish are currently very popular.

Appliances

Do you dream of a huge American style fridge that will dispense chilled water and fresh ice cubes? Do you imagine yourself cooking for your friends on a six-ring chef style gas hob? Make sure that these big ticket items are planned into the room and your budget from an early stage or you may find that you have either the space or money to accommodate them.

Accessories

You can personalise your kitchen with accessories to suit your lifestyle - perhaps a wine cooler or a special condiments cupboard. Do make sure that you plan a space for your bins - nothing will spoil the look of an integrated kitchen like a kitchen bin and recycling bins interrupting the flow of the space with no obvious home. Use of a food waste disposal unit can dispense with kitchen waste and mess at the press of a button.

Lighting

Make sure that the work areas in your kitchen have adequate lighting. You might want to install some dimmer switches or use different lighting zones to create an intimate ambiance if you are planning to entertain guests in the kitchen area.

The finishing details

Don`t ruin your new kitchen by skimping on the finishing details: cheap cupboard handles will become loose; the finish may wear off and will most likely ruin the look and feel of your new kitchen. Buy the best Cabinet Hardware Knobs that you can afford and finish the project in style.
